As a professional musician, Charlie Kears spent 15 years on the road playing drums; he started fly fishing while indulging his musical talents, living first in Bishop and then in
Lake Tahoe
,
California
—both places being within easy reach of exceptional fly angling destinations. Charlie began tying flies for trout in the 1970s. There wasn’t a whole lot to do sitting in the hotel room between rehearsals and shows. He purchased his first fly tying kit and in a short amount of time was missing rehearsals on a far too regular basis. After moving to the Central Coast of California in 1985 he was introduced to fly fishing for Bass and Strippers. Kears became addicted to top water bass bugs the first time he saw a bass explode on a popper. After building and tying a few poppers for warm water fishing Charlie was hooked and began specializing in balsa and cork body poppers. He has been refining these “Bugs” for 20 years. Charlie’s favorite waters to fish are Santa Margarita Lake near
San Luis Obispo
,
CA
and
Bethel
Island
on the Sacramento Delta. Charlie’s best effort on the Delta has been a 17 lb. Stripper caught and released back to Frank’s Tract with one of his “Voodoo” poppers. Charlie has been featured in Southwest Fly Fishing Magazines Innovative Fly Tier and submits tying articles regularly. Charlie has been a FFF member for many years and is active in
California’s Central
Coast
conservation efforts. He is a regular fly tier at many ISE and FFF shows.
