I have fished from the time I was old enough to. My Dad and Mom always included me on our fishing trips. I have fished all my life. Before I retired from Susanville, Ca. in 1991, I lived on the road to Eagle Lake and fished it when I could and other parts of that area. When I retired, I moved to Redding, Ca. so I would have more spring and fall without snow. That's when I started fly fishing. I joined the Shasta Fly Fishers in 1996. That's when I learned so much from our club about fly fishing. I enrolled in the fly tying class. The next few years I helped coach the class and learned more. I was the Shasta Fly Fishers, Fly Tyer of the year in 2003. It's not that I am a great tyer, I tie flies that I catch fishing on and live to let them go for another day for someone else. Not long after I started tying, I was introduced to Jay Fair's materials. I bought a bunch of it and it improved my catching. His dying of the many different colors and the quality of his material are superb. I tied many of his patterns and came up with one of my own that I call my Eagle Lake Tulle Fly. One morning on Eagle Lake, I landed five large rainbows and broke off the the sixth with the same fly. I fish mostly Northern California, Idaho and Montana. I love tying at the shows. I am going to be 72 this month and I hope to be doing this for many years to come. |

Ben Byng - back |
|
Fishing has been in Ben’s blood since he was a young boy. His grandfather took him on many journeys from the Great Lakes to the Florida’s Keys. His father took him on summertime trips to Eastern Idaho for remote small streams fishing and high mountain adventures. These experiences have armed Ben with lesson that would follow him into fly-fishing. Having the California Delta in his backyard, Ben has spent many hours jamming in his boat through this 1200-mile waterway looking for Striped Bass. This is his fly-fishing wintertime playground. From 2001-2005 he helped Andre Puyans with his Fly-Fishing Seminars in Eastern Idaho at Elk Creek Ranch. Ben has worked his way to Operation Manager. In 2006 he was brought on as an instructor for Wilderness Unlimited and Becoming an Outdoor Women (B.O.W.), teaching fly-fishing seminars in May and September. |

I started fly fishing and fly tying in 1956 and really never fished any other way (very much). I started instructing and guiding in 1991. I was an Orvis endorsed guide for ten years, also in 1991, I became an exhibition fly tier. In 1994 I started Tight Lines Fly Fishing School. Then in 1996 I became an FFF Certified fly Casing Instructor. In 1999 I wrote my first book (Stillwater Trout). In 2002 I did a video for TV (Introduction to Fly Tying). One of the highlights of my fly tying life was in 2002 when Jack Dennis asked me to tie my CDC Emerger for his new video Jack Dennis and Friends-Volume 3. I was also asked by Jim Schollmeyer and Ted Lawson if they could use the same CDC Emerger in there new book Tying Emergers. You know I said YES! In 2003 my Crawler Fly was fishing by the Ultimate Fly Fishing Team in Jackson Hole on Fly. In 2006 Ron Lewis owner of Sierra Stream and Mountain, the makers of the Tie-Fast Tool and the new home of The Jay Fair Fly Tying Materials asked me to come on board. Since then I have started the Jay Fair Pro Team. |

Dan Kellogg - back |

My passion for fly fishing is related to most of my other hobbies, boating, hiking, birding, and most important, fly tying. Once the kids left the nest I was determined to keep that promise to myself about learning to tie, not to save money on flies but just to create an imitation that could catch fish. The creativity has turned into the art phase. The bug caught me, all you tiers know what I mean. The book shelves are packed with old and new, feathers and fur overflowing into the garage. Heck, the accumulation of materials could be considered a hobby by itself. |
